The Writersphere – 9

Friday, November 27th, 2009

So, here we are, just shy of a month before Christmas. You really wanted to be reminded of that, didn’t you? Have YOU finished your shopping yet? If you haven’t, I have some suggestions, if you have, has anyone told you lately that you’re an overachiever? Just kidding.

Sort of. Overachiever.

Yes, that has been my word for November. Overachiever. Some of my friends from NaNoWriMo and NaNoWriYe and their amazing NaNo word counts, some from really early on – overachievers.

Speaking of NaNo… I have officially given up for this year. I’ve not looked at the word count since… the 22nd, I believe. I won’t look at it again until Monday morning, but I know in my inner word counter clock (it’s a nifty little thing I picked up at a steampunk shop at third star to the left of morning….) that I’m no where near 25k, let alone 50k.

There are a lot of reasons I didn’t make time for the writing this year, and it comes down to bad planning on my part, combined with my youngest sharing her curly-tail germs which kept us all down for two-three weeks with flu. It is words to my yearly count, and it is a good story that I will keep working on, putting the rest of the WiPs into a trunk file for at least a year. Seriously.

Moving on…

General Bits of Publishing Interest…

Nathan Bransford, one of two agents whose blogs I read on a regular basis, recently posted an interesting response to an author’s revealing information on her income for one title. She’d broken it down, apparently (I haven’t read the original post), into what she earned, what the estimated gross and net profits were for the publisher. Nathan’s response was, from my experience past and present, far more accurate. Well, obviously she’d be right about what she earned, but I see more accuracy in his calculations.

The Ghostwriters Society

Dear, patient Bob Freeman (who has yet to scold or send flocks of spirits after me) has decided to close up the main Ghostwriters Society webspace, and integrate it with his own Occult Detective site. The articles I have in process are going to be completed, and will be posted to Occult Detective in future, I believe… Once everything has transitioned, I’ll be posting an announcement here.

The Writersphere – 8

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

My apologies for the lateness of this posting. Issues arose both personally and professionally that distracted me from the blog and I promise to spank myself later. With a paddle.

Meanwhile, in the Writersphere….

It’s that time of year again, folks! Insanity ensues with writers from all over the globe putting fingers to keys, pens to paper and voice to tape all in the hopes of creating 50,000 new words towards a novel in November.

That’s right, it’s National Novel Writing Month in less than ten days.

Oh my gods, it’s actually only 6 days away and I still don’t have another plot and storyline and the characters are all screaming in my head and I don’t know what I’m going to do……

I’ll just have to sit down here and type my fingers bloody every day next month.

HARVEST HILL: 31 Tales of Halloween Horror
Edited by Michael J. Hultquist and Douglas Hutcheson

Welcome to Harvest Hill, Tennessee: a seemingly idyllic community. But within the shadows of this restful town roams a centuries-old evil that rears itself in some awful form or influence every Halloween when the veil between worlds is thinnest. We offer a choice crop of truly disturbing accounts – large and small, stretching from the 1700s into the present day – as a warning to all. If only the residents understood the unspeakable thing that has writhed and raged among them for ages, and keeps growing…

An Amorous Thing, a collection of dark fiction from Kody Boye, revolves around the theme of affection. Whether that be a killer’s desire to slice your face open or a lover’s will for you to be happy, all revolve around the twisted, oftentimes morbid theme of love. We do crazy things when we care about people–love them, hate them, kill them. Each act is done with love and with purpose.

To celebrate this collection, Kody is holding a contest for the cover art. front covers only, for now, but the selected winner will be asked to do the entire wrap.

Rumors of Rich Ristow and Scott Colbert dancing with a Jabberwocky must be true. Hand in hand in tentacle, they have produced Bandersnatch Books, a fine new press. They’re not currently seeking much by way of submissions, but you’ve gotta know, with a name like Bandersnatch and a the management of Rich and Scott – it’s gonna be one hell of an exciting ride.

The New Bedlam Project is currently in fundraising mode – meaning any sales of swag, ad space or donations to the cause will result in my dying my hair in streaks. Again. I know I swore I’d never do a repeat, but what the hell. It’s only hair… Right? Visit the website for donation/purchasing information and the forum to vote on the colors that are going in.

Check out our ads, and you know what? They’re bloody cheap if you run them through Project Wonderful. 30 days at 0.02 per day? Come on, who can’t afford that! Ya’ll should give ‘em a looksee.

And that would be that, for this issue. Doesn’t seem like much, but hey…it’s enough to keep you busy for a long time!

Writersphere Reloaded (v.7-ish)

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

The last Friday of every month, I’ll be posting a new Writersphere. I may or may not add another posting during a month, depending on whether or not there is a lot of news to relate.

This week:

The Funky Werepig returns from Horrorfind with someone else’s shoes and what might be damning evidence to dispose of. Or at least, a handful of funny-ha-has and giggles to be shared during the show. Stop by, call in and give Baloo’s butt a pinch from me. This week’s special guests are friends from Liquid Imagination. They’re celebrating a year online!

Louise Bohmer’s The Black Act is now back in print and available through Amazon.com! No one should pass this book by, and I’m not saying that just because I was one of the editors. Louise did an amazing, mind-blowing job creating a huge world of her own, where witches and the Fae play twisted games in the shadowed forests.
The Black Act – back, and just a bit darker than before. No, really. Greg Hall said so – he said it’s haunted.

52Stitches, the print anthology, is now available from Strange Publications! Aaron Polson (editorial god and writer phenom) collected a years worth of flash fiction that defies explanation. Included authors are Cate Gardner, Blu Gilliand, Jeremy Kelly and more.
52 Stitches – in print!
52 Stitches – online!

Dead Bells Anthology is still open for submissions! The world has come to a silent halt on New Year’s Day, 2010. Protagonists wake up to find themselves the sole-survivor… or are they?

I just have to say, Doc Pus and the family at the Library of Horror/Library of the Living Dead are amazing people. There are a ton of books just released and/or in the pipeline for the coming months. Doc is a wildman with a plan and a bottle of nitrous oxide, and he’s going to convert everyone into zombie-loving family members in no time. Kudos to the LotLD/LoH folks that made it to Horror Realm to meet and greet and eat!
